Digital media, especially social platforms, are changing the ways people interact, giving rise to new and diverse audiences and empowering civil society in ways that have profound implications for UNICEF’s work – and for how communication and public advocacy are used to support that work. To drive change for children, UNICEF Gulf Area Office is growing its digital and social media capacity to target, reach and engage meaningfully with audiences across multiple digital platforms.

The Digital and Social Media Consultant will have the proven professional skills to advise and implement strategies and workplans for UNICEF Gulf digital communications channels, create engaging and innovative content for all channels, will be up to date and passionate about the latest technologies, techniques and industry best practices, and will be able to apply them to reach a broad range of audiences.

This assignment is a unique and exciting opportunity to help drive the digital presence of a world-renowned brand in a dynamic region and will ensure UNICEF Gulf continues to increase digital reach, engagement and participation of audiences on priority issues related to children’s rights worldwide.

Under the supervision of the Advocacy and Communication Manager, the consultant will:

  •  Strategize and implement clearly articulated plans to expand UNICEF’s voice, reach and engagement in the Gulf area across all social and digital channels in line with UNICEFs digital objectives
  •  Ensure UNICEF Gulf uses industry best practice (global and local) to engage followers in a dynamic, interactive and meaningful way.
  •  Advise, develop and implement individual fundraising campaigns in close coordination with internal and external partners to maximize financial returns on investments.
  •  Identify opportunities for collaborations with regional and global influencers, develop engagement plans and foster collaborative working partnerships.
  •  Ensuring brand consistency through all public facing products by applying UNICEF branding guidelines to creative graphic designs.

How can you make a difference?

  •  Maintain a digital plan/s for the Office which will integrate the different digital platforms with a view to bolster brand positioning, fundraising objectives and advocacy goals in priority issues targeting different audiences.
  •  Implement a content editorial calendar to manage content and plan specific, timely campaigns.
  •  Continuously research, create and manage relevant, high-quality, and creative and engaging content on key issues for the different digital platforms – this may include travel within the UAE and to other Gulf countries as required. Further, the consultant will turn technical content into general public and social media-friendly language to increase engagement from various sets of audiences. The content must be reviewed/approved by relevant sections and Communication staff.
  •  Develop customized, graphic designs, including data visualizations and other infographics, for social media, UNICEF website, and other information products
  •  Monitor, listen and respond to followers in a dynamic and interactive way while cultivating meaningful engagement.
  •  Adapt UNICEF global content to the make relevant and suitable for the Gulf context
  •  Media buying: Design, create and manage promotions and social ad campaigns, including media buying plans for social media as required.
  •  Take the initiative to regularly update online platform designs.
  •  Measure and analyse the impact of online platforms and social networks and make monthly (or more often if needed) reports.
  •  Monitor trends in social media tools and tactics, applications, audiences, emerging trends and strategy especially in the Gulf area. Assess and report risks and threats to appropriate management.
  •  Identify, develop and expand a community of key digital influencers and digitally active stakeholders who can help us in our digital outreach efforts.
  •  Keep track of initiatives by relevant organizations and agencies that may be relevant to our work.
  •  Provide general assistance to the Communications Section including managing and working with relevant suppliers
  •  Provide technical advice and capacity building to partners and UNICEF staff as required

Travel

As part of the financial offer, the consultant will include a budget line covering own flights, accommodation, meals and miscellaneous for three missions as follows:

  •  Cairo, Egypt, date TBC: to participate in a team retreat and advise with digital communication integration across GAO’s workplans.
  •  Geneva, Switzerland, dates TBC: to take part in a co-creation workshop with colleagues from Private Fundraising and Partnerships division.
  •  Riyadh, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, November 2023: to lead the implementation of digital communications at World Children’s Day celebrations.

Work relationships

Based within the UNICEF Gulf Area Office in Dubai the consultant will report into the Communication Manager, and will work closely with the Communication Specialist, Partnerships & Resource Mobilization team and the Programme team. As required, the consultant will also work in coordination, communication personnel in the MENA Regional Office, HQ, other UNICEF Offices, and also external partners with relation to social and digital media

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have…

  •  Academic qualifications and required level of education; Bachelor’s Degree in Digital Media, Communication, Marketing, Public Relations, Advertising, Journalism, creative writing or related fields.
  •  At least two -three years of extensive experience running social-media platforms to achieve organizational goals and objectives for a brand, business or relevant organization (including NGOs)
  •  Displays in-depth knowledge and understanding of social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, etc.), their respective participants and how each platform can be deployed in different scenarios.
  •  Proficient in content strategy, development and editing.
  •  Proven knowledge and experience of producing and planning content for social media channels to reach and engage broad audiences
  •  Must demonstrate excellent writing skills especially for digital platforms.
  •  Proficiency in graphic design, infographics and photo editing. Proficiency in video editing is a highly-valuable asset.
  •  Maintains a working knowledge of SEO, Google Analytics, social media analytical tools and management platforms like Hootsuite, etc.
  •  Displays ability to effectively communicate information and ideas in both written and verbal format.
  •  High ethical standards and understanding of sensitivities relating to children is highly desirable.
  •  Both a team player and an individual contributor.
  •  Fluency in English and Arabic (written and oral) is required.

The selected candidate is solely responsible to ensure that the visa (applicable) and health insurance required to perform the duties of the contract are valid for the entire period of the contract. Selected candidates are subject to confirmation of fully-vaccinated status against SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) with a World Health Organization (WHO)-endorsed vaccine, which must be met prior to taking up the assignment. It does not apply to consultants who will work remotely and are not expected to work on or visit UNICEF premises, programme delivery locations or directly interact with communities UNICEF works with, nor to travel to perform functions for UNICEF for the duration of their consultancy contracts.
