Organisational Context
The Joint Data Center is a collaboration between two multilateral institutions – the World Bank and UNHCR – joining efforts and expertise towards improving the quality and quantity of data for evidence-based policy decisions and responses to global forced displacement crises. The collaboration between the World Bank and the UNHCR builds on their on-going joint initiatives on forced displacement including analytical work and microdata collection.
The mission of the Center is to enhance the ability of stakeholders to make timely and evidence-informed decisions that can improve the lives of affected people. The Joint Data Center leverages partnerships and innovation in its focus on the collection, analysis, dissemination and use of primary microdata that enables policymaking, programming and research. This includes demographic and socioeconomic data, including on income, skills, education, health, and economic activity on refugees, internally displaced persons, stateless people, returnees, asylum seekers and host populations.
Duties and Responsibilities
The main responsibilities will include to:
- Carry out data analysis and prepare descriptive analytical summaries to support JDC activities, including proof-of-concept analysis and quality assurance.
- Conduct analysis to inform forced displacement microdata curation and dissemination approaches to ensure they continue to meet user needs.
- Contribute to the production of data and evidence gap-maps on forced displacement.
- Contribute to literature reviews on the issue of forced displacement (focusing on quantitative analyses) and draft of topical summaries.
- Support team members in the drafting of presentations, visualizations, papers, and summary reports on a range of topics tools and events in support of results dissemination.
- Collaborate with team members in the preparation and delivery of events, internal and external meetings, including notetaking and production of supporting documentation.
- Perform other tasks as needed
Minimum Qualifications Required
In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Be either a recent graduate (having completed their studies within two years of applying) or a current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by IAU/UNESCO; and
- Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to the work of UNHCR.
NOTE: An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister is a staff member of UNHCR, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship.
Desirable Qualifications and Skills
- Hold a Bachelor’s degree equivalent or higher in a subject such as Economics, Political Sciences, International Studies, Health Studies or similar, with a proven quantitative focus; or in the field of Statistics or Quantitative Methods;
- Have a demonstrated knowledge of handling, cleaning and preparation of microdata;
- Demonstrate a thorough understanding of econometric and impact evaluation methods;
- Have a good command of statistical packages, such as Stata®, or R;
- Have a demonstrated interest in forced displacement issues and/or experience working in this area;
- Display full command of written and oral English, including strong drafting skills;
- Have excellent research skills;
- Be able to work well independently as well as in an intercultural team; and
- Be available to work full time (40 hours per week) throughout the duration of the internship.
- Knowledge of French or Spanish;
- Knowledge of geospatial analysis and associated software;
- Previous experience in research activities and drafting of dissemination products (reports, policy briefs, data summaries, etc.); and
- Previous working experience on forced displacement and development issues.
Location and Conditions
It is a full-time role with working hours starting from 8.30am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday (40 hours per week). The successful candidate will be assigned to support the JDC team at UN City, Copenhagen, Denmark. Depending on the circumstances, there is a possibility the successful candidate will perform certain duties remotely and/or from home.
Recruitment as a UNHCR staff member and engagement under a UNHCR affiliate scheme or as an intern is subject to proof of vaccination against Covid-19.
For non-EU candidates, D-visa needs to be obtained before traveling to Denmark which takes 4 to 6 weeks. The office will provide assistance on visa-related issues.
Allowance: Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help to cover the cost of food, local transportation and living expenses.
Unless provided or paid by their sponsoring entities, UNHCR reimburses interns’ travel costs to/from the duty station.
